In 2017-18, 23 per cent of local authority gross revenue expenditure in Wales was on social services, and this is the second largest area of local authority expenditure after education. In a statement on 9 October, the Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Public Services detailed that the local government settlement for 2019-20 includes a further £20 million to ease pressures on social services.
