QNR – in the Senedd on 29 January 2020.
The Welsh Government considers nuclear energy can potentially help to address the real and urgent challenge of climate change. It can provide a reliable and efficient source of electricity, which the UK Committee on Climate Change considers to be necessary to the UK until at least 2050.
Renewable energy is a critical part of the efficient and reliable low-carbon energy system that will support a prosperous low-carbon Wales. We met half our power needs from renewable energy in 2018. We need more renewable generation to meet the growing demand for low-carbon heat and transport.
I have regular dialogue with the chair and chief executive of Natural Resources Wales. We have a robust governance structure, including regular official-level sponsorship committee meetings. The chief executive, as the accounting officer, is accountable for NRW decisions and is supported by the board.
